Double eyelid surgery (Asian blepharoplasty) is not only popular with Chinese females to make their eyes bigger and easier to apply eye make-up, it is increasingly popular with Chinese males. About 1/4 of my double eyelid patients are males. However, there is a difference in creating double eyelid in female and male and this difference must be appreciated to avoid dissatisfaction. As a thumb of rule, Chinese females with natural double eyelids have their creases higher than those Chinese males with natural double eyelids (the same is true for Caucasians and Africans). This anatomical difference should be borne in mind when creating double eyelids in Chinese males otherwise the patients may appear non-Chinese and feminine.
Chinese females with natural double eyelids that are regarded as attractive
have good show of skin between the skin crease (double eyelid) and
the eyelashes.
On the other hand, Chinese males with natural double eyelids that are
regarded as attractive have little show of skin between the skin crease
(double eyelid) and the eyelashes.
For the Chinese females, I usually perform incisional technique or suture technique (if the eyelid is not puffy with fat) at a height of 6mm. A bit of fat is trimmed off in the incisional technique to make the eyes appear slightly deeper but not excessively. In the Chinese males, the height should be set lower and I usually choose 5mm with little excision of skin or fat so that less skin is shown between the double eyelid and the eyelashes.

Hello Prof. Chua, it seems that the surgery only involves adding a crease on top of the eyes. The size of the opening of the eyes remain the same.
ReplyDeleteThere are some Korean stars that had their eyes widened a lot through surgery. How was that accomplished?
I noticed their before eyes have their upper lid almost covering half of their pupil and the entire pupil is visible after that. Wouldn't removing skin to accomplish that would lead to lagophthalmos?
The first Chinese female example has stunning results.
Hello, that is because the skin is pushed away from the eye. Please refer to my previous at http://eyelidsurgerymalaysia.blogspot.com/2010/12/why-do-double-eyelids-make-eyes-bigger.html
ReplyDeleteHi doctor, I have very fatty eyes which the fat cover the crease. which tenique should i use for surgery? can i use suture?
ReplyDeleteIf you have thick eyelid caused by fat suture technique is not advisable as the fat will prevent proper formation of double eyelid. Incision technique with fat removal is the best option.
ReplyDeleteHi Dr Chua,
ReplyDeleteAbout two years ago I went for double eyelid surgery in Thailand. I got the partial incision method with three cuts done. The sad thing is that after about a year it disappeared. Only a slight bit is left on my left eye. And my left eye has also become smaller and looks droopy and cat eyed. May I know if its because the surgeon did not attach the crease to the muscles properly (regarding left eye)? And may I know why is it the crease on both eyes has disappeared? Thanks...
Regards,
Ernest
